North Korea Rebukes U.S.-South Korea Joint Exercise
(MENAFN) Pyongyang has sharply criticized the joint war games conducted by the United States and South Korea, calling them a destabilizing threat to regional security.
In a statement released by media on Tuesday, Kim Yong Bok, the first vice-chief of the Korean People's Army (KPA) General Staff, condemned the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise as anything but "defensive." He argued that the massive drill, led by the world’s largest nuclear power along with its regional allies, aimed at the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), could not be described as such.
Kim said, "The current joint military drill is the one for an actual war, which makes its provocative nature more clear, as it renewed the records of all the past rehearsals for an anti-DPRK war in its nature, scale and mode." His statement emphasized the increasing threat posed by the war games, noting that they have expanded beyond bilateral participation.
The statement further highlighted that the exercise, now involving several nations and marked by an unprecedented scale and duration, has become the largest, longest, and most intense military drill both in the Asia-Pacific region and globally.
North Korean authorities further declared that they are closely monitoring the situation and stand prepared for any eventuality. This latest condemnation follows earlier similar criticisms from DPRK Defense Minister No Kwang Chol and a KPA General Staff spokesperson.
